Jiayi Liu was born in China in 2002 and had her first cello lesson at the age of ten. She studied under Weixi Luo at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music’s middle school and with Danjulo Ishizaka at Basel Music Academy. She has taken masterclasses with Steven Isserlis, Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt, Wenn-Sinn Yang, Maria Kliegel, Lawrence Lesser and Paul Katz.

Jiayi has won many international competitions. In spring 2022, she won first prize at the Janigro Junior Cello Competition and the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra Prize in Croatia. She also won a first-place prize at the 2015 American Protégé competition, second prize at the 2016 Korea Phonn Classic and third prize at the 2016 Cleveland Cello Competition and was awarded a scholarship to the 2018 Morningside Music Bridge.

At the age of 13, Jiayi gave her debut concert at Qingdao Concert Hall. In the years that followed, she gave solo concerts and ensemble performances at Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Concert Hall, Shanghai Concert Hall, Shanghai Oriental Art Centre, Shenzhen Concert Hall, He Luting Concert Hall, Mozart Conservatory Concert Hall in Salzburg and Jordan Hall at New England Conservatory.

In winter 2021, she played in Grammy-winning composer Tan Sun’s Buddha Passion tour, with concerts in Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Lanzhou and Changsha.
